From Rehab to Competition
Text By: Sean Ross

Injuries, unfortunately, are inherent risks associated with athletics competition. Surgeries to common sports injuries such as ACL tears and ankle fractures lead to several months of rehabilitation and lost playing time. Many times the post surgical rehab athlete is discharged from therapy after a functional level is reached, but their athletic performance is nowhere near the level it once was or needs to be.

The gap between rehab discharge and returning to prior athletic performance levels is often guided by the “just take it slow” advice and a lucky rabbit’s foot. This is especially true of the amateur or non scholarship athlete that may lack the access to a supervised progressive program. Jumping and running present the biggest obstacles to increasing athletic performance as well as reducing the odds of re-injury. Plyometric (jump training) programs should start with learning to land correctly.

STAGE 1
Stage 1 should give be eliminated and jumps should be performed from the ground onto boxes of heights that will a soft, stable landing.
